Cirfenna

Collarmele [3] · S. Felicità in Cerfenna bei Collarmele [5]

Listen to the story

Cirfenna is Cerfennia, a road station of the Marsi at Collarmele above the Fucine basin, where a church called Santa Felicità in Cerfenna kept the old name into the twelfth century. From here, in 48 or 49 AD, the emperor Claudius built a new road over the central Apennines and down the Aterno valley to the sea; a milestone records that he laid the Via Claudia Valeria from Cerfennia to the mouth of the Aternus and built its bridges as well.
