Clano
(near St-Rémy de Provence)
Clano is Glanum, just outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, named after the god Glan, who was worshipped with the Mothers at a healing spring. By the second century BC it already looked like a small Greek town, perhaps dependent on Massalia, though its people were Salluvii. It lay on the old trade route between Italy and Spain and commanded the way into the Crau plain. Its ruins include a council house, sanctuaries, a triumphal arch and the famous monument of the Julii. The town was plundered around 270. The map spells its name with a C.
