Citium

Klosterneuburg · Exelberg

Listen to the story

Citium was the last station of Noricum before Vindobona, the Roman Vienna, a border post in the Vienna Woods, perhaps on the Exelberg or near Klosterneuburg. Its name recalls Mons Cetius, as the Greek geographer Ptolemy calls these wooded hills, but the station must not be confused with the town of Cetium, which a Roman register of routes lists further up the same road. The map's mileages on this road differ widely from the real distances; perhaps a copyist left Cetium out, taking it for a doublet of Citium.
