Clavenna

Chiavenna

Listen to the story

Clavenna, now Chiavenna, lay at the foot of the Splügen and Maloja routes, where the road from Chur came down towards Lake Como. The Roman writer Pliny knew its quarries of soapstone, carved into cooking pots, and an altar to Jupiter has been found here. The map runs straight on to Como and leaves out the stop at the head of the lake, where travellers could also take a boat.
