Cesserone

St-Thibéry

Cesse Rone is one name, Cessero, split in two on the map because the road line runs straight through it. It is Saint-Thibéry on the Hérault, once a fortified town of the Volcae Tectosages and later a station on the Via Domitia, where three roads met. The Roman register of routes calls it Araura or Cesserone, after the river, the pilgrim from Bordeaux lists it as a mansio, and the silver cups from Vicarello, engraved with the road from Cádiz to Rome, name it too. A milestone of Tiberius dates from the year 30. The modern name recalls Saint Tiberius, whose feast was kept here in the Middle Ages.
