Chanata

El-Qanawat

Listen to the story

Chanata is Kanatha, now Qanawat in the Hauran of Syria, and its name means canals. Water was its fortune: the springs make it likely that people settled here very early, and under Trajan the governor Cornelius Palma channelled them to supply the town, probably renewing an older canal. Once the easternmost city of the Decapolis, it later passed to the province of Arabia, flourished in the first centuries AD and was then overshadowed by Bostra. Its ruins include a temple of Helios, two churches, a theatre, a hippodrome and tomb towers.
