Charra

Harran

Charra is just a name on the map, twenty-six Roman miles from Edessa, yet it stands for Carrhae, the city at Harran, which the map seems to name once already as Charris on a road above. The figure on to Fons Scabore reads twenty-seven. Counting along that other road, through Sahal to Ressaina, which lies at or beside Fons Scabore, gives sixty-seven instead, so the first X of the numeral was probably once an L. A Roman register of routes calls the city Carris, the Ravenna list Chara.
