Chelas

? bei Dikili Burun ? Cebice

Chelas, the Claws, took its name from headlands on the Black Sea coast of Bithynia that jut out like a crab's pincers. It was a village and a small fort, a stopping place for ships between the island of Daphnusia and the mouth of the Sangarius, probably in the bay of Keçilik near Dikili Burun, where an ancient quarry, roof tiles of Hellenistic or early imperial date and clay water pipes have been found. A Greek dedication, probably set up by its villagers, names them the Chelaitioi.
