Charris

Harran

Charris is Carrhae, the Haran of the Book of Genesis, whose ruins lie at Harran on the river Charra. It was a Macedonian colony, famous for its temple of Lunus and Luna, and remembered for the defeat of Crassus by the Parthians; the historian Ammianus describes a town ringed by weak walls. From here ran the royal road that the emperor Julian took into Persia. The map seems to mark the town twice more, as Charra on the road just below and probably as Tharrana.
