Batnis

Sürüç

Batnis is the Batnae of the Greek and Roman historians, and lay at Sürüç in Turkey. Once an important town with its own municipal rights and a yearly slave fair, it had shrunk by the time of Procopius to an insignificant little place; it also bore the name Markopolis. A road branched off here to Edessa, which Procopius puts a day's journey away. The map counts thirty-two Roman miles from Thiar and thirty on to Charris.
