Chimerium

??? heute: Akhtanizovskaja ???

Chimerium takes its name from the Cimmerians, a legendary nomad people of Iranian stock who lived here in the eighth and seventh centuries BC and appear in Assyrian and Babylonian records and in the Old Testament. The spelling with Ch probably reflects a popular link with the Greek word for wintry or stormy, a reading also known from ancient notes on a line of Homer. The name marks a town, not the whole strait. The Ravenna list ends its long tour of the Black Sea coast here, which places it on the eastern side of the Strait of Kerch.
