Sindecae
Listen to the story
Sindecae stands for Sindike, the land of the Sindi on the Taman peninsula, named after this people. It was fertile, densely settled farming country, where Greek colonies such as Hermonassa and Apaturon arose on the coasts in the sixth century BC. Its chief town, the Sindian harbour, later Gorgippia, could also carry the name of the land. From King Leukon on it belonged to the Bosporan kingdom, later Mithradates ruled it, and in Roman times it was Bosporan again. One older theory even took the Sindi for a colony from India.
