Silvo

Savudrija · Punta Salvore

Listen to the story

Silvo stands alone on the map, with neither a road line nor a distance: it is Savudrija, the Punta Salvore, at the tip of Istria in Croatia. Excavations show an important harbour and supply base on the sea route from Aquileia by Tergeste to Pola, in use from the first to the sixth century, with a Roman port and an aqueduct. The map is the earliest record of the name; the list of places compiled in Ravenna writes Silbio, with b for v. Perhaps the lone name is a trace of a coastal route recorded nowhere else.
