Phamacorium

Listen to the story

Phamacorium is Phanagoreia, founded in 543 BC by Greeks from Teos on the Taman peninsula, who were drawn by fertile soil, fresh water and plentiful fish. It became the capital of the Bosporan kingdom on the Asian side of the strait, matching Panticapaeum on the European side. After rising against Mithridates it sided with Rome; later Goths ravaged it, Huns destroyed it, and from the seventh century it was the capital of Great Bulgaria. The foundations of its harbour lie under water, and in 2005 a hoard of one hundred and sixty-two late archaic silver coins was found.
