Phasin
~ Poti
Phasin was the Greek trading post at the mouth of the river that shared its name, now the Rioni, where Poti stands on the Georgian coast. The Roman writer Mela says Themistagoras of Miletus founded it in the middle of the sixth century BC, though no Greek settlement has yet been found. By Arrian's day it was a fort with a temple of Cybele, where visitors were shown the anchor of the Argonauts' ship; Arrian doubted it was genuine, because it was made of iron. Under the emperors the place grew into an important harbour.
