Road station

Philacon

Dweig (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Philacon is Phalakron, the bare rock, a small station at Dweig on the desert road from Coptos to Berenike. Its fort measures only thirty by twenty-six metres, yet it is among the best preserved on the route. Here the caravan road from Edfu across the Eastern Desert joined the road from Coptos. The station first appears on a potsherd from the reign of Trajan or Hadrian, and it was probably abandoned early in the third century, sooner than Dios and Didymoi.
