Philias

Kara Burun

Philias, at the cape of Kara Burun on the Black Sea west of the mouth of the Bosporus, was a coastal place belonging to Byzantium, settled since the Old Stone Age. Here stood a shrine of the hero Stomianos, guardian of ships, perhaps joined to a lighthouse; a relief of the Thracian Rider was also found. Military ground and modern building make digging hard. The distance onward reads only ten miles, about fifteen kilometres, but it stands at the faded edge of a parchment sheet, and one or two numerals may have dropped out after the X.
