Picentiae

Vicenza (Miller) · Pontecagnano (DNP)

Listen to the story

Icentiae is a garbled Picentia, near Pontecagnano, not far from Salerno. In 268 BC Rome resettled members of the Picentes here, a people from the Adriatic coast; when they later sided with Hannibal, they were driven out into villages, and Rome built Salernum as a fort to keep watch over them. Long before, an Etruscan town had flourished on the same plain, whose princely graves of the seventh century BC were filled with imported treasures.
