Phenice

Finiq

Phenice is drawn without a town symbol, perhaps a sign of its decline, yet Phoenice, at Finiq in Albania, was once the richest and best-fortified city of Epirus and the chief town of the Epirote League. Illyrian raiders under Queen Teuta sacked it in 230 BC, and in 205 BC Rome and Philip the Fifth of Macedon made peace here, the Peace of Phoenice. In late antiquity, as the Byzantine historian Procopius says, Justinian built forts on the nearby heights instead of walls. The map's fifty-six miles on to Buthrotum are far too many; the real distance is about fifteen.
