Road station
Petenisca
Studen (Barrington) · Worben o. Büttingen (Miller)
Petenisca is Petinesca, a fortified road station at Studen near Biel in Switzerland, on the road from Avenches to Solothurn. On the slope of the Jensberg a stretch of ring wall and a massive gate survive, and a tile stamped by the Twenty-first Legion from Vindonissa shows that soldiers were posted here. On the hilltop above lies a Gallic refuge, enclosed by an oval rampart with traces of fire, and the name may first have belonged to it. The Forum Tiberii named by the Greek geographer Ptolemy may be the same place under its official name.
