Petrum viaco

(zwischen St. Clair-sur-Epte und Magny) (Miller)

Listen to the story

Petrvm viaco is probably a garbled form of Petromantalum, a station between Rouen and Paris in France, perhaps between Saint-Clair-sur-Epte and Magny. Two important roads met here, and the name may say as much: petru is Celtic for four, and the whole name has been read as the place of four ways. Older research tried Mantes, Magny and Bantelu, while a modern atlas leaves it unlocated. The Roman register of routes lists it on two different roads.
