Mediolano autercorum

Listen to the story
Mediolanum Aulercorum was the chief town of the Aulerci Eburovices, a Gallic people in the Roman province of Lugdunensis, and lies beneath Évreux in Normandy. The copyist slipped here, writing a t in place of the l, so the tribe turned into Autercorum. In later Roman times the town took the people's name, civitas Ebroicorum, and from that comes Évreux. Excavations have found a theatre from the reign of Claudius, and inscriptions name town councillors and fullers, the cloth workers. Older research placed the town at Le Vieil-Évreux, six kilometres away, but that site was a Gallo-Roman sanctuary.
