Megara

Μέγαρα

Listen to the story

Megara takes its name from the Greek word megaron, a hall or lordly residence, and survives as the town of Megara in Greece. It was the chief town of the Megaris, the narrow land bridge joining Attica to the Peloponnese, and the Roman writer Pliny pictured Megara and the port of Pagae as the two shoulders of Hellas. The map tips this isthmus upright, and both towns sit slightly out of place; whether that was planned or crept in through careless copying is unclear. Megara sent colonists as far as Byzantium and gave its name to a school of philosophy.
