Menturnis

Minturno

Listen to the story

Menturnis, the Roman colony of Minturnae, stood where the Via Appia crossed the river Liris, now the Garigliano, close to its mouth, near modern Minturno in Italy. Rome settled colonists here in the early third century BC to control the road, and the town, spread over both banks, became the trading centre of the region with its own harbour. In the marshes between town and sea the general Gaius Marius once hid from his enemies, and Cicero praised the people of Minturnae who saved him. A hundred and fifty arches of its aqueduct still survive.
