Milev Colonia

Mila

Listen to the story

Milev Colonia was a Roman colony in Numidia and lives on as the town of Mila in Algeria. Its fuller title, Colonia Sarnensis Milevitana, recalls Publius Sittius of Nuceria on the river Sarnus, who fought for Caesar in Africa in 46 BC and was rewarded with land around Cirta. The town became one of four colonies bound to that city. Later it was a bishop's seat, home to Optatus, a friend of Augustine, and hosted church councils. On the map the copyist bent the road into a small zigzag so as not to underline the name, then set the town's symbol just beyond it.
