Mogontiaco

Mainz

Listen to the story

Mogontiacum, today Mainz in Germany, probably takes its name from the Celtic god Mogon, though a goddess or a personal name are also possible. The Romans built a fortress for two legions here, on a terrace above the Rhine facing the mouth of the Main, and the town later became the seat of the governor of Upper Germany. The map gives it a pair of towers, fitting that rank. A memorial to the general Drusus, who died in 9 BC, and a great column to Jupiter stood here, yet the geographer Ptolemy wrongly placed the city in Lower Germany.
