Mothone

Methoni · Μεθώνη

Listen to the story

Mothone took its name from Mothon, a rock lying just off the shore, and lives on as Methoni on the west coast of Messenia in Greece. Homer knew the site by another name, Pedasos, one of the seven cities Agamemnon offered the angry Achilles. In 31 BC Agrippa destroyed the fleet of the Mauretanian king Bogud here, the emperor Trajan later declared the town free, and in AD 365 an earthquake and sea wave struck it. Its ancient walls survive only as foundations beneath a Venetian fortress. The map gives thirty Roman miles from Pylos, where twenty would be right.
