Mursa Maior

Osijek · Essegg

Listen to the story

Mursa Maior, Greater Mursa, took its title to set it apart from its smaller namesake Mursa Minor, the neighbouring station on the road, and is Osijek in Croatia. The map gives it the usual pair of towers. Hadrian made it a Roman colony, and it prospered as a trading town at a crossing of the river Drava, known for its pottery. Emperors rose and fell here: in AD 350 Vetranio had himself proclaimed emperor in the town, and in 351 Constantius the Second defeated the usurper Magnentius nearby. The copyist may have left out a stretch of road linking it to the next station.
