Listen to the story

Mileopoli is a slightly garbled label for a town whose Greek name meant the city of Miletos, after a legendary founder hero celebrated on its coins from Hadrian's reign onward. In truth it was probably settled in the seventh or early sixth century BC, either from Cyzicus or from Athens. It lay in Mysia, at Melde in northwestern Turkey, beside a lake named after it that has since silted up. On the map the red road line runs straight through its pair of towers, as if the copyist forgot the drawing and squeezed it in afterwards.
