Mevanie
Bevagna
Listen to the story
Mevania, today Bevagna in Umbria, lay on the Via Flaminia in a low, damp plain. The Roman poet Propertius wrote of its misty fields, while Lucan and the farming writer Columella praised its herds of tall cattle. In AD 69 the army of Vitellius waited here for the advancing Vespasian. The map marks the town with a pair of towers, but the road is muddled: Mevania and Spoletum seem to have swapped places, and the sixteen Roman miles from Forum Flaminii, about twenty-four kilometres, were probably meant to be six.
