Mediolano Sancorum
Saintes
Listen to the story
Mediolanum Santonum was the chief town of the Santones, a Celtic people whose name survives in the region of Saintonge. From the late third century AD the tribal name gradually displaced the town's own, and so it became Saintes, on the river Charente in France. The map marks it with a pair of towers with pointed roofs, set so close to a river that the name could not be written above them in the usual way. Three roads met here, and a Roman bridge over the Charente carried an arch honouring Germanicus, built under Tiberius and destroyed in 1843.
