Maxula

Radès · رادس

Listen to the story

Maxula stood on the sea near Tunis, and the town is today's Radès in Tunisia. The map marks it with the usual pair of towers. It lay in Africa Proconsularis and bore a strong Punic stamp, and Greeks may at times have called this seaside town Leukos Tynes, White Tunis. The Roman writer Pliny and several inscriptions call it a colonia, a Roman colony, though probably by mistake. The geographer Ptolemy set it apart from an older Maxula further north. In Christian times its bishops appear again and again in the church records.
