Largitzen am Large

Large, at Largitzen on the river Largue in Upper Alsace, takes its name from the river, which flows into the Ill. It was a halt of the Rauraci on the road from Besançon to Kembs and Augst, near the village of Friesen. A large farmstead with a bath, built in the second century, was fortified in late antiquity, not as a true fort but to protect traffic on the road in troubled times. The list of places compiled in Ravenna seems to garble the name as Laguirion.
