Larabus

Henchir-Lorbeus

Larabus is Lares, today the ruins of Lorbeus in Tunisia, whose modern name keeps the old one almost unchanged. In the war against Jugurtha, as the Roman historian Sallust tells, Marius made Lares his base for the march on Capsa. Under Hadrian or Antoninus Pius it became a colony, and bishops of Lares are recorded from 258. Justinian gave it new walls, parts of which still stand, on the road that Hadrian had built from Carthage to Theveste.
