Perthoricto
Peratia · Περατιά
Perthoricto is a garbled Dioryktos, the dug-through, the canal that separated the island of Leucas from the mainland of Acarnania in Greece; the station lay on the mainland near Peratia, at the end of a bridge. The first syllable may be a copyist's Latin per for the Greek dia, through. Colonists in the seventh century BC cut through the isthmus; the channel silted up again and again, so that in the age of Augustus small boats had to tow ships through, and in the time of the Roman writer Pliny it was blocked.
