Salodurum
Soleure · Solothurn
Salodvrvm is Salodurum, today Solothurn in Switzerland, where the road along the foot of the Jura crossed the Aare by a bridge and boats could land. Its Celtic name probably means the fort of Salos. In 219 a soldier of the Twenty-second Legion, posted here to oversee the village, honoured the horse goddess Epona. In the fourth century the harbour quarter was turned into a fort with walls more than three metres thick, and the medieval town grew out of it. Here, the legend says, the martyrs Ursus and Victor of the Theban Legion died.
