Salinis

Ocna Mureș (Romania)

At Salinis, today Ocna Mureș in Romania, the Romans worked great salt mines, which were found again only in 1791. Roof tiles stamped by the Thirteenth Legion Gemina and the Fifth Legion Macedonica, and the trace of a Batavian cavalry regiment, show that soldiers were stationed here. The station lay twelve Roman miles from Brucla and another twelve from Patavissa. For a long time older research mistook it for Turda. Its name, which occurs elsewhere on the map as well, simply means at the salt works.
