Salinis

Salpi

Listen to the story

Near Trinitapoli, by the salt pans of Margherita di Savoia, lay Salinis, the salt works, the later name of old Salapia. The Roman writer Pliny says Salapia was famous for Hannibal's love of a courtesan there. Because of its fever-ridden marsh, the town was moved by decree of the Senate to healthier ground by the sea. On the map the name and the distance dodge a hole in the parchment that must already have been there when the copyist worked.
