Saletione

Seltz

Saletione is Seltz in northern Alsace, where the Selzbach and the Sauer flow into the Rhine, on the road from Strasbourg to Mainz. A Celtic hill fort came first; the Roman village grew from the time of Claudius to some twenty hectares, with a bath, potteries, smithies and foundries. Layers of burning show that it was destroyed again and again, and the Roman historian Ammianus records its destruction in 356. Early in the fifth century a unit called the Pacenses was stationed here, according to a late Roman list of garrisons.
