Samaco

Kato Samikon · Κάτω Σαμικό

Samaco is Samikon, near Kato Samiko in Greece, the largest fortress of Triphylia, on a spur of the Kaiafas hills between a lagoon and a lake whose cave, sacred to the nymphs of the vanished river Anigrus, held sulphur springs. The Eleans probably built it in the fourth century BC; Philip the Fifth of Macedon took it in 219 BC, and by the time of the Greek geographer Strabo it stood empty. Somewhere in the plain below lay the sacred grove of Poseidon where the towns of Triphylia met. The distance figure towards Cyparissa is hard to read: some see twenty-four, others twenty-seven.
