Cenonnydroma

Wadi Khashir (Barrington)

Cenonnydroma is the Greek Kainon Hydreuma, the new watering station. Pliny names both a new and an old one, and this is probably the new. Such fortified water points guarded the caravan tracks across Egypt's eastern desert, and both the map and the Roman register of routes make this the last stop before Berenike, the port on the Red Sea. The site is placed in the Wadi Khashir. Older research described a fort ringed by walls and towers there, with a temple, large columns and Greek inscriptions. The station may have been built up under the prefect Iulius Ursus, though that is only a guess.
