Cenopurio

near Sinekli

Cenopurio, near today's Sinekli in eastern Thrace, is the Greek Kainon Phrourion, the New Fort. Here, in 275, the Emperor Aurelian was murdered, on the road from Apollonia to Selymbria. The map counts thirty miles from Ut Surgas and twenty-nine on to Ad Statuas, about forty-three kilometres; the register of routes also has it, as Cenofrurio. The scribe split the name after the p to make room for a letter of the word Thracia, and the road line is missing here: a branch to Constantinople may once have forked off.
