Listen to the story
Centuripa, now Centuripe, an old Sicel hill town facing Mount Etna, grew rich under Rome on the grain trade; Cicero calls it the wealthiest city in Sicily. On the map a copyist first wrote the name with a double p, noticed too late, and tried to scrape out the first p, almost erasing the i before it and leaving a gap. The map sets Centuripa twelve Roman miles from Agyrium and twelve from Aetna.
