Cencris

Kechries · Κεχριές

Cencris is Cenchreae, today Kechries in Greece, the eastern harbour of Corinth on the Saronic Gulf, though the map shifts it into the Argolid. It flourished from the first century AD: Pausanias saw a bronze Poseidon, a temple of Aphrodite and shrines of Asclepius and Isis, and Apuleius set the great Isis procession of his Golden Ass here. Paul's letter to the Romans commends Phoebe, a deaconess of the church at Cenchreae. An earthquake late in the fourth century lowered the ground by about a metre.
