Apsaro
Gonio
Listen to the story
Apsaros stood where the Chorokhi river meets the Black Sea, at Gonio in Georgia. Legend held that it was once called Apsyrtos, after Medea's brother, killed here in the tale of the Argonauts, and visitors were shown his tomb. When the Roman writer Arrian sailed this coast around AD 131, five cohorts garrisoned its fort. The map, however, swings the whole coastal road from Trapezus eastwards, apparently because the draughtsman misjudged how many stations he had to fit in. Excavations since 1995 have found a grave outside the fortress holding a small golden statuette of a youth.
