Apris

Kermeyan?

Listen to the story

Apris began as a Thracian settlement where the road forked towards Ainos and the Thracian Chersonese, and under the emperor Claudius it became a Roman colony. In the fourth century the Roman historian Ammianus named it one of the two leading cities of the province of Europa, beside Perinthus; from 431 it was a bishop's seat, later renamed Theodosiopolis. Its site probably lies near the village of Kermeyan in Turkish Thrace. The map honours it with a pair of towers, yet the road bends here towards Ainos, which it does not do on the ground, and the lines to Heraclea and Aprodisia were never drawn.
