Arbor felix

Listen to the story
Arbor Felix, the lucky or fruitful tree, is Arbon on Lake Constance in Switzerland. The historian Ammianus Marcellinus passed a fort of that name, and a late Roman list of commands places a tribune there with a cohort raised in Pannonia. Around 612 Saint Gallus found a Christian priest living in the castle, by then called Arbona, the name it kept through the Middle Ages. On the map the road on towards Chur counts forty-three Roman miles, about sixty-four kilometres, though the route needs nearly sixty, so a station, probably Magia, seems to have dropped out.
