Phara
Feiran (Barrington)
In the oasis of Feiran in southern Sinai lay Phara, the Pharan of late antiquity. Only the early church identified it with Paran of the Old Testament, the wilderness from which the Israelites sent their spies into Canaan. In the 5th century it became a bishop's seat, and in the 6th the large oasis was an important military post. The pilgrim Egeria, who calls it Faran, puts it thirty-five miles from Mount Sinai, about fifty-two kilometres. The map sets it on the road from Clysma to Aila, south of Mount Sinai, as Christian tradition placed it.
