Clisma

Kolsum (Miller) · Kum el-Qolzum · Suez (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Clisma, Klysma in Greek, stood on the Gulf of Suez, where a mound of ruins called Kolsum survives on the edge of the modern city of Suez. Under Trajan it received a fortified harbour, and it was the end point of the link from Babylon in the Delta to the Red Sea, by the desert road or by Trajan's canal, reopened shortly before AD 112. Ptolemy calls it a fortress. Papyri mention it as late as the 8th century, some of them written in both Greek and Arabic. A tear in the parchment right after the figure forty leaves the next distance uncertain.
