Road station
Lacus mori
Scheib (Miller) · Great Bitter Lakes (Barrington)
Here the map writes a lake into the road as though it were a station: Lacus mori, the Bitter Lakes, brackish waters on the isthmus of Suez. Through them ran the canal from the Nile to the Red Sea, begun by the pharaoh Necho, finished by Darius and restored by Ptolemy the Second and by Trajan; the largest of them is today's Great Bitter Lake on the Suez Canal. In ancient Egyptian they were called the great black lake. The map gives no distance on either side, and the road on to Clisma is missing, perhaps forgotten by the draughtsman.
